Chocolate Orange Cupcakes

August 2, 2010

Laura’s Blog Entry

We’re all about the gourmet cupcakes around here. One of our local fav’s is Sugar Cupcakery in Milford. A couple of cool sisters run this hip outfit. I heard about them through their smart usage of Twitter. They achieved some recent television fame on the show Cupcake Wars on Food Network. BTW, they were robbed, people. (They came in second place.) The display that won was U-G-L-Y. Theirs was modern and fresh. Most importantly, the cupcakes are fantastic. They have a really pretty tea service to go with the treats. While they make all kinds of organic cupcakes, I was most surprised by their vegan ones. So delicious. They also do gluten free flavors.

Anyway, so that we don’t go broke I decided to make some special cupcakes at home. I searched epicurious.com for something chocolaty and dreamy.

Here’s the result:

You can find the recipe here. Epicurious is great because you can read the comments and see what people say about the recipes and what tweaks they made. I followed their advice and added 2 Tablespoons of orange juice and 1 Tablespoon canola oil as the original was reported to be a bit dry. With these changes they were incredibly moist! The ganache frosting was to die for.

Oh, and I didn’t have whole milk for the cake, so I used 1%. It worked fine.

The cakes are not terribly tall – and the layer of frosting is not huge since it is so rich. There was no photo so I thought I was low on batter or something. They are perfectly fine this way. Very tasty and don’t need to be any bigger. Crazy good.
