Laura’s Blog Entry

Our city sells large compost bins a couple times a year at a very reasonable cost to encourage composting and reduce garbage. I picked one up this summer. Yesterday we got it put together and set up. It is not going to hold much yard waste – I could fill that with an hour of weeding! But it will handle kitchen scraps with some yard waste mixed in. It should break down everything more quickly because it is black and I placed it where it gets at least partial sun each day.

Note the “harvesting” door at the bottom… in six months I might actually have a little something. Just in time for winter. Oh well.

As long as you properly layer the food scraps (no meat or protein) with dried leaves, no yucky smells are supposed to result. So there you go, Earth! Don’t say I never did anything for ya!
