I Love Robert Smith

September 15, 2008

Laura’s Blog Entry

Below is a repost of a MySpace bulletin written by Robert Smith of The Cure. Apparently there was some error made when their new remix EP was posted on iTunes UK. It appeared with the wrong pricing structure. Mr. Smith is not happy. Mr. Smith uses choice language. I have fancied up the profanity for the faint of heart, but you’ll get the message.

This is interesting to me because it gives a glimpse into the world of a wildly successful artist and his frustration with the system. He seems to give a $#^T, which is always nice.

Please note: All caps were his, not mine. Adorable.

Thanks for posting this. Hilarious. He is right of course. The iTunes pricing is crazy. I bought the physical CD in a store today for £2.99 and it is amazing. The remixes are fabulous and a real bargain at that price too. I have all five of the CDs ad they make a great set. Feels like the old days when owning real CDs was something special.

well, surely, but what does he expect? I mean, it is Universal… and I wasn’t aware someone pointed a gun at Mr Smith when signing this contract with the recordlabel, he was well aware of Suretone + Universal – instead of going the Mr. Reznor way + do it in a fanpleasing way, it is all that lame bashing + bashing, maybe he should think twice before signing once next time, would make things much easier. Obviously the price tag for the (to my ears:… useless) EP was insane, on the other hand seeing what people a few days ago had to pay in mainland Europe (Euro-countries), the 9.99 EUR are equivalent to approx 14 US$ already… plus one thing he never complains about: all The Cure stuff is only available on Itunes in low quality and not in itunes+… thanks again to Universal (for example compared to stuff by EMI).

Interest stuff, Dennis. Thanks. It seems the big record companies don’t care a bit about what the artists (who are making them all their money) want. Who knew? Shocking! Sounds like more work ahead for the artist if they want things done their way.
