Rock the Square

June 30, 2007

Laura’s Blog Entry

It was square; and it rocked! We went downtown early last evening for an outdoor show by the newly renovated fountain. It looked beautiful, although I couldn’t get a good photo of the whole thing due to the sunlight. Here is a little detail:

Luckily the weather cooperated and we were neither seared by the sun nor rained upon. We saw Hungry Lucy do a nice set – including a long-awaited performance of their Depeche Mode cover “Blue Dress.” Neil and I have always wanted to do a cover of this song together, and we were happy to find another twosome who did so. I love the song with a female vocal. It was the first song the two of them ever did together as a musical project. What a nice beginning!

Mari got to see them for the first time, and got to hear her favorite song, “Harvest.”

We hadn’t been to this part of downtown for a while, so it was nice to see the changes. Although I’m not so sure how I feel about the jumbotron. But it is good to know $3 beer was available until 8:30!

Finally, here’s the centerpiece of the downtown area, Carew Tower. Quite a lovely building, really.

Podcast out tomorrow, folks. See how calm I am? I’ll probably wake up in a cold sweat at midnight when it goes live…

Google Searches

Laura’s Blog Entry

Now that we have this new blog, I have access to more statistics than I could have imagined in my wildest dreams. I pour over this stuff, because it fascinates and amuses me.

For example, I can see, if someone found the blog through a Google search, what they were searching for. My favorite so far:

“fairy figurine store, Gettysburg, PA”

We are the #1 result on Google if you search for this. Because I mentioned Mari made a little stop there on our vacation. This cracks me up! We are the #1 result. Not the actual store. This is our audience… Depeche Mode-listening, Battlestar Galactica-watching, fairy figurine-collecting listeners! What could be better, I ask you!

The Birthday Blog

June 25, 2007

Laura’s Blog Entry

Yesterday was Mari’s 9th Birthday. It’s extra exciting for her when we can have her celebration with friends on the actual day of her birthday. She was thrilled to receive a gift of the rollerblades she requested, along with all new 9-year-old-sized safety padding. She looks like she is going into battle (or on a job with Dog, the Bounty Hunter) when she heads out in all her gear. Gotta protect those dancer legs.

She was in charge of designing her birthday dessert and she came up with these pretty yellow-cake cupcakes, frosted in pink, with marshmallows and candies. Very pretty!

Today I worked on the script for the August podcast. We recorded the July episode this past Saturday, and it caused Neil somewhat of a headache in the editing. In fact he’s still not done. We went extra-long, for our Depeche Mode Extravaganza, and added in some special things. It seems well worth the effort and we are very happy with the result. I am a bit nervous about how it will go over, though. That is the scary thing about putting this stuff out there. There are people in that “out there.” And they have opinions. Eeeeekk! Be gentle, ya’ll. It will be up and running on July 1.

Vacation Memories Part Deux

June 21, 2007

Laura’s Blog Entry

Another exciting day on vacation was spent in Baltimore, Maryland. We went to the harbor there because we had to eat some crab, the local specialty. Here is my delicious lunch that I enjoyed very much – a luscious crabcake atop a salad. Yummy!

Other local specialties we enjoyed were saltwater taffy (for Neil and Mari) and fudge (for me). I think fudge is the local specialty everywhere, isn’t it? There is always a fudge shop around on vacation.

We took a little peddleboat ride in a dragon boat.

On the paddleboat I snapped some pictures (when I really should have been peddling. I thought I was peddling, but apparently I was only moving my legs in a circle and Neil was doing all the work – oops!)

When we got home we did some much needed work on the front of the house – a fresh paint job. We also participated in a yard sale with some friends in Northern KY. There always seems to be too much stuff at our house. Now we have a little breathing room with 2 car-loads of items sold or donated.

Of course you can’t participate in a yard sale without helping out your friends by buying some of their stuff. That is just the way it is done! So Mari got some lovely unicorn figurines from our friend Keena. Goes well with the fairy figurine she talked Neil into buying her in Gettysburg, PA at the little fairy figurine store.

Anyway, here are my yard sale finds:

Cool lamp for the living room.

Vintage typewriter. (Thanks, Christian!) This makes me very, very happy. It inspires me to keep writing. (Mari is reading over my shoulder and says it makes her happy, too.)

I am off to play on Facebook. Come find me there if you are a Facebooker. But before I go, here is Mike, the King of the Yard Sale:

Vacation Memories

June 19, 2007

Laura’s Blog Entry

I did my work on the computer this morning – boring financial stuff – and now I get to blog. Yea! After a busy second week of vacation at home, I am feeling nostalgic for our trip. Time to walk down memory lane.

Our first day was spent driving the 500 miles to Pennsylvania. Not a bad drive, although the signage in Maryland leave a bit to be desired.

The next day Mari had a real treat. It was Horse Day. She is one of those little girls who have the horse fascination. So in the morning we headed over to Gettysburg, PA to The Land of Little Horses.

We visited here last year, and she loved it. There are small horses and animals in pens and some are walking around. You can feed them and pet them. It is very well maintained and clean and the animals are very friendly. Mari was in heaven.

Our favorites this year were the goats. They were very photogenic.

So take that, Andrew! Sure, your sheep pics were cute, but come on! Top this if you think you can!

Not sure where that came from – sorry! After the trip to see the little horses, it was time for the real thing. Mari got a birthday gift from her grandparents – a trail ride on a full size horse. Her Aunt Peg took her and they had the best time.

Horseshoes

A trip to Hanover wouldn’t be complete without a couple of pizzas from Jerry and Sal’s. This is NY style pizza, which we really can’t get where we are. Dewey’s Pizza is close, but not quite the same.

So other than those highlights, I did some reading, and I hit my stride with my latest knitting project. I love what I am making (can’t say what it is because it is a gift) but I was struggling with the lace pattern because it calls for using 2 different yarns together as one. This made it rather difficult to work with when doing the “yarn-overs” and making the open holes of the pattern. But I finally got the feel for it and could stop working so hard. That’s when I love knitting most. When I can forget the pattern and just let my hands just do it. Very zen. I am on the last color change now that I am home and plan to finish it up this week. One Christmas gift done! Here’s a photo that doesn’t give too much away. I really like the color combo I came up with.

On the way home we had one of our usual AH-HA moments. Something about the start of a long drive when you know that home is at the end of it brings things to light. We realized that we both approach vacations differently when it comes to money. I won’t go into details as it was Neil’s revelation and I don’t know if he’d appreciate me putting it out there, but anyway, it was really helpful to us to figure this out. Now I understand where he is coming from and I have a bit more compassion. More importantly he understands where he is coming from.

We both approach vacations similarly when it comes to planning. Here’s our philosophy: Our lives are busy and fulfilling. Our vacations need to be a break from all that “input.” We don’t want to go to museums or historical sites. We want to rest. We want to sit. And stare. And not have to focus on anything. Why do I feel that the expectation for me is to go on vacations and then “do” a bunch of things? I don’t want to, gosh darn it! I feel like if I want to go sit and stare into space I have to choose a moment when no one is watching so they won’t think I am weird. That’s my hang-up, I guess.

That’s enough for now. Tune in for more vacation stuff in the next post.

Behind the Podcast – Episode 6

Laura’s Blog Entry

The June Podcast is up, and as promised, here are some extra goodies to go along with it. But again, even though we already posted it – here’s the long awaited link to Neil BSG short film, called “Catharsis”:

I want to share some photos from the Martin Gore DJ event at The Old Kings Road Pub in Santa Barbara, CA. Two of my Mode buddies were kind enough to share their pictures – lucky, lucky girls.

Here is Mr. Gore, DJ extrordinaire! Note all the cameras pointed at him. Yikes!

Here are 3 very cool chicks!

And here is the man himself with Bubblesark. Did I mention how lucky they were?

Finally, there were some guys there, too. Here’s Rustidonell’s husband doing the robot. So, so sorry I missed this in person!

Sigh… maybe next time I can go…

Well, that’s all we’ve got. Time for vacation! Here’s to a week of reading, knitting, and basic sitting arounding!

Show Notes

Summer is here and we have vacation brain. So before we head off on holiday and bake our aging skin in the harmful rays of the sun (can you say 50 SPF?), we threw together this little program. Neil gets introspective on his album Lush One, we talk about great road trip music, “tawny leather seats,” new music from Alan Wilder and Dave Gahan and celibacy. Same old, same old, right? Finally, Neil chronicles his experience filming his entry for the BSG Videomaker contest on Scifi.com. Adios, amigos. We are outta here!
